6.4 Manufacturing Program Control

The purpose of Program and Project control is stated as follows:
"Through this activity the Program Manager provides direction and exercises control over the program. The purpose of this activity is to ensure that program implementation is conducted in an effective manner, considering performance, cost, schedule, and quality commitments in the Program Plan.  This activity provides management oversight of all aspects of the program, especially oversight and review of the constituent projects. This activity ensures the collection, tracking, reporting, and management of the program according to agreed-upon metrics." (Ref: NPR 7120.5C, NASA Program and Project Management Processes and RequirementsLinks to a different Web site: Section 2.4.2.1)
Through the control activity, the program/project manager must demonstrate and advocate a commitment to safety and program/project mission success. For additional information on the program control function, refer to: NASA text Readings In Program Control (SP-6103), section titled Program Control in NASA: Needs and Opportunities.

This section outlines specific Program Control activities during the Manufacturing phase.
