1.2 Program Management Planning 1.2.6 Develop Configuration Management Plan 1.2.6 Develop Configuration Management PlanConfiguration management is the discipline of identifying and formalizing the functional and physical characteristics of a configuration item at discrete points in the product evolution for the purpose of maintaining the integrity of the product system and controlling changes to the baseline. It permits the orderly development of a system, subsystem, or configuration item. A good configuration management program ensures that designs are traceable to requirements, that change is controlled and documented, that interfaces are defined and understood, and that there is consistency between the product and its supporting documentation.
Configuration management includes the activities related to configuration identification, control, verification, and accounting. Safe and successful projects require effective configuration management.
Software Configuration Management is addressed specifically in PBMA Section 5.2.1.1, Establish Software Configuration Management Plan.
