NPD 8700.1C, NASA Policy for Safety and Mission SuccessLinks to a different Web site establishes that it is NASA policy to:
  • "Have key processes third-party certified to the International Organization for Standardization's (ISO 9000) Quality Management System Standards by an internationally recognized registrar."

Furthermore, Section 5.e.1 states that PPMs are responsible for:

  • "Implementing SMA policies, plans, techniques, procedures, and standards, including the implementation of ISO 9000 standards, within the programs and projects."
NPD 8730.3 , NASA Quality Management System Policy (ISO 9000) establishes that it is NASA policy to:
  • "Implement within NASA a QMS in accordance with the ISO 9000 QMS Standards.
  • Contractually require NASA suppliers to be third-party certified in those cases where it is determined to be appropriate and beneficial to NASA."
The ISO 9000external link standards are designed to help organizations set up quality systems in the design, development, production, installation, testing, inspecting, and servicing of products. The NASA QMS references the following three ISO subsections:
  • ISO 9001 - Contains guidelines for the design, production, installation, and servicing of products.
  • ISO 9002 - Contains guidelines for production and installation of products.
  • ISO 9003 - Covers the final inspection and testing of products.
Note:  ISO 9001:2000 combines these three standards 9001, 9002, and 9003 into one.
